The Best Time to Install Sod in Idaho
One of the most common questions we hear as a Meridian, Idaho sod installer is when to lay it down. The good news: with proper watering, sod can go in across most of our growing season. But some windows are easier than others.
Spring and Early Fall: The Sweet Spots
Spring (once the ground thaws and warms) and early fall are ideal in the Treasure Valley. Temperatures are mild, the cool-season grasses we use are actively growing, and the sod roots in quickly without the stress of extreme heat. Fall installs get the added benefit of establishing before winter, so the lawn comes back strong in spring.
Summer: Doable With Diligence
Mid-summer sod absolutely works — we install in July and August regularly — but it demands more water and attention during the rooting window. In our dry heat, fresh sod can dry out fast, so a working sprinkler system isn't optional. If you stay on top of watering, a summer lawn establishes just fine.
Winter: Wait
Once the ground is frozen, sod can't root and sod farms stop harvesting. Winter is the time to plan and get on the schedule, not to install.
