Sod vs. Artificial Turf in the Treasure Valley
As a backyard installer in Meridian, Idaho, we get asked all the time whether real sod or artificial turf is the better choice. We install natural sod, and for most Treasure Valley backyards we think it's the right call — but here's an honest look at both.
The Case for Natural Sod
Real grass is cooler underfoot, which matters in our hot, dry summers — artificial turf can get uncomfortably hot in direct July sun. Sod costs far less up front, it's soft for kids and pets, and it cools the air around it. The trade-off is that it needs water and mowing, and our climate means a real irrigation system is a must.
The Case for Artificial Turf
Turf shines in specific spots: deep shade where grass won't grow, tiny courtyards, dog runs, or homeowners who travel and can't keep up watering. It's no-mow and stays green. But the up-front cost is high, it heats up in full sun, and it still needs a proper drainage base or it puddles and smells.
Our Take for Treasure Valley Yards
For a typical Meridian backyard with sun and space, natural sod paired with efficient sprinklers and irrigation gives you a cooler, softer, more affordable lawn. We often use sod for the main yard and rock in the hot or hard-to-grow zones — the best of both worlds.
